Although Juneteenth has been celebrated for decades, it wasn’t until just last year that it finally became a recognized US federal holiday.

The holiday, which commemorates the events of June 19, 1865, when those still enslaved in Texas were finally liberated, is the first federal holiday to be added to the calendar since President Ronald Reagan signed into law a holiday for the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. back in 1983.

Juneteenth is now recognized as a federal holiday to be observed on June 19 each year, with the exception of the years in which it falls on a weekend such as in 2022. In those instances, the holiday is to be observed on the closest working weekday which this year will be June 20, 2022.

As the newest federal holiday, there is understandable uncertainty among many regarding which businesses will close their doors for the holiday and which will operate during normal business hours. We already know the post office will be closed on June 20, but what about the DMV?

Is the DMV closed on Juneteenth? (2022)

If you were hoping to take care of something at the Department of Motor Vehicles on June 20, we regret to inform you that DMV offices across the US will not be open on Monday in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

As such, you’ll need to wait until Tuesday, June 21, to head out to take care of any business you have at the DMV when your local DMV reopens its doors.

Why is the DMV closed today, June 20, 2022?

The Department of Motor Vehicles will not be open on June 20, 2022, in recognition of Juneteenth, which became an official federal holiday in 2021. Like the post office and banks, the DMV closes its doors on federal holidays which is why branches across the US will be closed on Monday and will not be operating during their usual business hours.

Doors should reopen on Tuesday, June 21, so be sure to check your local branch to confirm their hours of operation.
