The Carmilla Movie (2017)

If you were anywhere on the gayer side of the Internet from 2014-to 2016, then you’ll know what Carmilla the web series was and what it meant to the queer community. For the uninitiated, Carmilla was a web series on the YouTube channel KindaTV adapted from the original vampire novela “Carmilla.” The series followed college freshman Laura (Elise Bauman) as she tried to solve a string of campus disappearances. Her new roommate, Carmilla (Natasha Negovanlis), proves to be a reliable companion in the search for the missing girls, despite her vampire status.

The film finds Laura and Carmilla five years after the season 3 finale, but it’s unnecessary to have seen the series to enjoy the film. Expertly finding ways to fill any new audience members in, The Carmilla Movie is a new take on the classic vampire genre but spun on its head to capture the queer experience. It’s campy, it’s dramatic, and it’s a whole lot of fun, especially during Pride Month.
