“By the End of This, You’ll Know Who You Were Meant To Be” creates a dangerous situation for Lizzie. However, one of the most significant results emphasizes Caroline and Josie’s absence from Legacies.

From the beginning, Caroline was written off as searching to stop the Merge between Josie and Lizzie. When Josie left Mystic Falls, she said she needed to save Hope. But, both of those situations have since been dealt with. Lizzie, as a Heretic, should likely prevent the Merge as she would never physically age. Meanwhile, after spending time with the Mikaelsons, Hope flipped her humanity back on.

Which begs the question: Where are Caroline and Josie now that Lizzie is about to undergo a potential self-sacrificial action?

Hope gears up for war against the Gods. She attempts to avoid unnecessary deaths, making a nearly-guaranteed death in a plan as a backup. However, she can not prevent the inevitable. Although Alaric is more than willing to die for the cause, Hope’s various attempts to reach an answer show that Lizzie is their best bet at surviving an explosion, even if it is a long shot.

Previously, it was never directly confirmed if Caroline and Josie knew exactly what was happening with Hope’s humanity returning or Lizzie transitioning into a Heretic. But, when Hope mentions that Lizzie went to discuss the plan with Josie and Caroline, it brings up several questions. If they had not previously been caught up, they certainly should be by now.

Although it has always been questionable toward Caroline’s character if she could stay away from her daughters for so long given what they have gone through, even if they visit Caroline off-screen, this is an event that shows how problematic her absence is. What did Caroline discuss with Lizzie off-screen regarding this plan? Lizzie agrees to the self-sacrifice, knowing there is a chance she could die. What did Caroline and Josie say?

As for Josie, her relationship with her twin is one reason why it seems bizarre that she has not come back to the Salvatore School. However, Lizzie mentioning discussing the plan with Josie also reveals other plot holes. Where is Josie? Is she with Caroline? How often does Josie speak to Lizzie or the Super Squad? Has Josie kept in touch with anyone since leaving?

Also, considering how devoted Josie was to helping Hope, it continues to be confusing if Josie has been updated on Hope’s humanity, and if she has, why there has seemingly been no communication between the two.

Caroline and Josie both care deeply for those they love and would do anything for them. So, both of them being missing during such a critical time for their loved ones is drastically out of character.

The upcoming series finale has a chance to rectify some of these issues if Caroline and Josie are brought in to help conclude Legacies. Anything from an in-person appearance to a voice-over, at least to give closure to their characters or show them interacting with their loved ones before the series ends. In addition, explaining their recent absence could help Legacies redeem itself for Josie’s confusing write-off aftermath and Caroline being away for so long.
