“Things That Go Bump In The Night” finally did something Riverdale has needed to do for seasons: Put Veronica and Jughead in a storyline together.

Veronica’s solution to bringing in money and attention to her casino is to put on a show featuring Jughead using his mind-reading ability to wow the crowd. However, while their fun performance at the casino is amusing and inspires Jughead’s writing, things pick up a bit when Reggie blackmails Veronica.

Reggie wants to be compensated for Veronica and Jughead’s performance, or else he will tell Percival the truth about how Hiram Lodge died. So, to avoid that, Veronica once again goes to Jughead asking for a favor that continues to broaden Jughead’s abilities.

This conversation manages to give Jughead and Veronica much-needed friendship development. While telling Jughead about Reggie’s blackmail scheme, she almost admits what Reggie is blackmailing her with.

Jughead does not seem entirely surprised by Veronica’s admission, taking in the information and commenting about how he had questioned Hiram’s death. Veronica’s request is to have Jughead erase Reggie’s memories of knowing Veronica had put a hit on her father.

Jughead’s research reveals he can remove Reggie’s knowledge, but only if he is asleep or distracted. So, while Veronica has Reggie count money in front of her, Jughead dives into Reggie’s mind, searching his memories, visually shown as comic books, until he finds the right moment and rips the page out.

Jughead’s success is proven moments later when Veronica takes back the money and Reggie can not remember what essential information he has against Veronica.

Veronica and Jughead are a good team when they are allowed to show it. Their dynamic, while underdeveloped compared to other relationships on the show, is still entertaining and intriguing when they are gifted the chance to work together.

Jughead and Veronica’s screen time together is often limited, making their bond portrayed in moments few and far between. However, they do not lack a dynamic, and even with their restricted time, Veronica and Jughead have still managed to create something interesting. With Riverdale coming to an end in season 7, there is still another season for the series to expand on their relationship.

However, Veronica and Jughead were not the only atypical pairing in “Things That Go Bump In The Night.” Archie and Tabitha’s storyline focuses on breaking down Pop’s Diner to move it to another location as a way to save it from Percival’s destruction. However, it is not as easy as they hoped. When the diner keeps getting put together by itself, Tabitha and Archie initially blame Percival before Tabitha’s team-up with Cheryl. Her old friend Heather reveals that Pop’s Diner is also home to long-time ghosts.

The ghosts reveal that they need to stay attached to Pop’s Diner so they can witness the final battle between good and evil. Pop’s Diner has always been a significant location in Riverdale, but season 6 emphasizes its importance to the overall plot moving forward. Pop’s Diner will play a critical role in whatever vital conflict is coming up.

But will Heather also continue to play a significant part in Cheryl’s storyline moving forward? Heather is a witch from Greendale and can help Cheryl learn more about witchcraft. But is she also a way to open the door to Sabrina Spellman’s return?

As for Betty, she spends plenty of time divulging critical information to a relatively new character, Agent Drake. Betty’s family history surrounds grooming people to become murderers. So Betty is immediately on the offensive when she sees a red aurora surrounding her nephew Dagwood. She returns a cat Alice had gotten Juniper and Dagwood to a shelter to keep the cat safe from her relatives.

Betty gets each kid tested for the serial killer gene, only to be thrown off when Juniper has it but not her brother. So, is Betty’s kryptonite people with the serial killer gene? If it was, it might not be anymore. As her powers are potentially expanding, Betty sees red auras around Alice and herself.

So, what does that mean for Betty? If Betty is a threat, who is she a threat to? Herself? Someone else?

“Things That Go Bump In The Night” teases plenty of potential future storylines. Whether it be more chances at seeing Veronica and Jughead work together, the coming war at Pop’s Diner, Cheryl’s growth as a witch, or Betty’s growing powers, Riverdale has plenty to answer for moving forward.
