The family-friendly action movie franchise, Spy Kids is back.

Robert Rodriguez, the original filmmaker of the 2001 franchise, is partnering with Netflix to remake and relaunch the series for a new generation. Rodriguez will executive produce, direct, and write the new project almost 21 years after the release of the first film.

While the original franchise featured Antonio Banderas, Carlos Gugino, Alexa PenaVena, and Daryl Sabara in the starring roles, the remake is set to feature a new family of spies. Additional plot details for the film have not been released.

The original Spy Kids franchise revolves around a family of spies. In the family, the parents are kidnapped and their children are set on a mission to rescue them. On their mission, they find out family secrets.

The series, which includes Spy KidsSpy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams (2002), Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003), and Spy Kids: All The Time in the World (2011), has grossed a global revenue of over $550 million.

The remake comes after Netflix has found success with a focus on family-orientated projects throughout recent years.  They include Ryan Reynolds’ The Adam Project, Jason Momoa’s Slumberland, Millie Bobby Brown’s Enola Holmes 2, and Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington’s The School for Good and Evil.

Rodriguez has also worked on the 2020 Netflix original, We Can Be Heroes. The film was also geared toward a family-friendly audience and starred YaYa Gosselin, Pedro Pascal, Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

The synopsis reads: “When alien invaders capture Earth’s superheroes, their kids must learn to work together to save their parents — and the planet.” It is currently available to view on Netflix.
