PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND – AUGUST 08: Emily Penn co-founder of eXXpedition poses for a photograph on the deck of the yacht Sea Dragon as the crew prepare to sail around Britain to highlight plastic in the oceans on August 8, 2017 in Plymouth, England. In a pioneering sailing expedition, starting and finishing at the University of Plymouth’s Marine Station, a diverse group of women will collect water samples to measure for micro-plastics and other toxic chemicals, as well as hold events in the various ports that they sail to including Cardiff, Belfast, Arran, Stornaway, Edinburgh, London and Plymouth. Emily Penn

You may not have heard of Emily Penn, but she is definitely a woman to keep on your radar. So what makes her one of our women making history right now?

How about the fact that she has spent her life fighting against ocean pollution and in particular all the plastics that end up in our waters. She has been named one of People’s Women Changing the World for her work empowering people (and other women) to make a difference in the world. She has traveled the world studying plastic pollution and helping others to find ways to organize cleanups.

And according to People Magazine:

"In 2014, the ocean advocate co-founded eXXpedition, an organization that empowers all-female sailing research expeditions, giving crew members the experience to create change in their own communities back home."

Honestly, we love learning about women making a difference in the world and doing their part to save the planet especially. And while we had never heard of Emily Penn before falling down the rabbit hole of looking for women making a difference in the world right now, we are so glad we did. After all, Penn is not just trying to fight plastics in the oceans, she is also shining a spotlight on what those pollutants are doing to our own bodies.

Here is someone who is helping spread awareness for a cause that we should all care about. And I am here for it.
