Alicia Keys turns her best selling studio album into a graphic novel
Alicia Keys is on fire.
The R&B songstress released her fifth studio album, Girl on Fire, led by the single of the same name in 2012. The album debuted to positive reviews and produced additional singles such as “New Day”, “Fire We Make” and “Tears Always Win.” It also took home the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. Because so, it is no surprise that ten years later, Alicia Keys has turned Girl on Fire into a graphic novel.
Girl on Fire becomes a graphic novel.
Keys went on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon to describe what her experience was like transforming her song into a YA novel. About the process, she said: “This song has been such a powerful statement and I wrote it when I didn’t feel on fire. I wrote it when I felt like I couldn’t make it when I saw my [female] friends and family members feeling defeated and reminding us there is nothing that stops us. We are on fire. So to see this transform into a book that can hopefully do that for so many others, I’m super grateful.”
The novel was released on Tuesday, March 8, and has already found success. It debuted on many Amazon bestseller lists, including Teen and Adult Young Fiction, Teen & Young Adult Science Fiction & Fantasy Comics, and Fantasy Manga.
While the graphic novel has been in the works for over five years, the story has remained the same. It follows Brooklyn native Lolo Wright as she discovers that she has telekinetic powers and learns how to use them for the greater good.
