Spider-Man: No Way Home skips out on the BAFTAs
Marvel Studios’ 2021 was a big year with WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Black Widow, Eternals, What If…?, Hawkeye, and lastly, Spider-Man: No Way Home making the biggest splash possible. With award season now upon us, we were hoping No Way Home would get a nomination of some description. Well, Deadline reports that the superhero smash hit, won’t be in the running at the upcoming BAFTAs.
According to the outlet, Sony did upload No Way Home to the BAFTAs streaming service in the required time to meet eligibility. What’s more, is round one of voting ended on January 3. One theory they’ve put forward is that Sony was worried about piracy and decided they wouldn’t pursue that avenue. Deadline then proceeded to reach out for further detail.
Fans have been clamoring for Sony to launch a campaign to get the film in the awards race, which is a rare feat for a Marvel film. The last Marvel flick to be in the awards race was Black Panther at the 2019 Academy Awards where it was nominated for seven awards including Best Picture.
The exclusion of No Way Home from the BAFTAs is considered a massive hit. It is currently clawing its way up the box office ladder to become one of the most successful films of all time with a worldwide box office grossing of $1.5Billion. It has beaten previous MCU entries, The Avengers and Black Panther on the list on its way to catching up with Avengers: Endgame, which currently sits at second place after James Cameron’s Avatar.
The film has earned consideration for the Oscars race which includes hopes that it will be included in the Best Picture category. If this were to occur, it would follow in Black Panther’s pawprints.
