It’s a new year, and we’re prepped and ready for everything Xbox Live Gold wants to give us for our subscription this year.

Naturally, it’s about as neutral as you would expect to start a new year on one of the lesser options of gaming subscriptions, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone. The good news is that while none of the games are overwhelmingly outstanding, you have some solid options to play.

Here are the offerings for January and the dates they’re available to download:

  • NeuroVoider, January 1 to 31
  • Aground, January 16 to February 15
  • Radiant Silvergun, January 1 to 15
  • Space Invaders Infinity Gene, January 16 to 31

Xbox Live Gold January 2022 highlights

First up is Neurovoider, a twin-stick, rogue-lite shooter game from 2016 with randomly generated maps. You can choose from three different play modes depending on how challenging you want it to be, three different Robosuits to wear, what skill you want, and what stage. Of course, you can upgrade items along the way. And the music is quite wonderful as well. If you’re a fan of rogue-lites, definitely check this one out.

Aground was released last year and is an open-world crafting RPG that truly feels like a cross between Minecraft and Terraria, just with a bonkers storyline to it that sucks you in the farther you progress. The gameplay is pretty straightforward and the only thing you may struggle with is inventory management as the world expands around you and you realize just how much this game has to offer.

Radiant Silvergun is a remastered version of the Sega arcade game from 1998 and is a brutal classic shooter. You’ll potentially feel like you’re playing a Souls game with how much you will end up dying at the start before your weapons upgrade enough to feel like they’re doing something. And it doesn’t feel like a game that is dated either (which is a bonus).

Space Invaders Infinity Gene takes the old-school arcade classic to new heights. As you start playing, it begins looking like the usual Space Invaders. But the more you play, the farther you progress, the more the game evolves around you, a little more of an RPG than just the old arcade game. It’s certainly a different spin and still just as fun.
