Genera+ion

Though this HBOMax original was short-lived, canceled after just one season, it still stood out this year as a beacon of storytelling for Gen Z specifically.

While most shows aimed toward teenagers feel out of touch or even patronizing, Generation’s 19-year old showrunner Zelda Barnz captured the essence of what life is like for teens today. The show was full of heart and humor, as it followed high schoolers as they try to navigate being young in the 2020s in LA.

Generation was also bursting with queer characters, with Chester (Justice Smith), Nathan (Uly Schlesinger), Riley (Chase Sui Wonders), and Greta (Haley Sanchez) being just a few. The new faces in this cast paired with quippy and smart comedy made this show unique, and it will be sorely missed in the queer TV sphere.
