Christmas music started blasting on many stereos the night after Halloween ended. And even if you’re in the minority, now that Thanksgiving is over, it’s a big probability that you’re blasting now. Spotify has just reported “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey
re-entered the top 10 US Spotify charts. The Mariah Carey song is not only one of Mariah’s most popular songs but one of the most popular Christmas songs there are.  With that being said, is it time for a new Christmas classic?

Do we need a new Christmas holiday song?

The Mariah Carey classic first debuted in 1994.  Carey has said that it only took her 15 minutes to develop and to this date has earned her more than $60 million in royalties. At the time, she was encouraged to develop a holiday song since many people were not producing Christmas music at the time. She said she was into decorating her home for the holidays and that IT served as her inspiration. With that came the song “All I Want for Christmas Is You”.  It explains the worldwide success that made it a staple for the holidays. Something so simple that made it relatable for people of all backgrounds, cultures, and stories.

Do you catch yourself singing along to it?  How about other holiday songs such as “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” or “Jingle Bell Rock”? These are all holiday classics that have been around for years. Even Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me” has existed since 2014. How many of these songs do not cause earworms after the second or third listen? They are not bad songs. But with the development of new instruments and beats, I will ask one question. Is it time for a new Christmas song that will live on even longer? I will argue that we can add a new song to the list.
