It’s almost time to (finally!!) return to Crescent City. The highly anticipated second installment in bestselling author Sarah J. Maas’ bestselling adult contemporary fantasy series, titled Crescent City: House of Sky and Breath, will officially hit shelves in February 2022, and though we don’t know that much about the plot of this story, we do finally have a look at its cover. And, spoiler alert, it’s beautiful.

The first novel in the series, subtitled House of Earth and Blood, introduced us to Bryce Quinlan, a half-human, half-Fae college grad, and Hunt Athalar, and the fallen angel assassin who eventually falls in love with her. Set in the world of Midgard, a place where humans live as second class citizens under the rule of a group of varied and elite supernaturals, beings who are organized into specific Houses according to their species, the story is dense, magical, and rich in terms of lore and worldbuilding.

The House of Earth and Blood includes shifters, humans, witches, and fauns. (Bryce’s murdered best friend Danika is a member of this house, which gives the first book its name.) Whereas the House of Sky and Breath is the home of Malakim, Fae, elementals, and Sprites, which explains why the series’ second cover is not only blue, but features Hunt, complete with wings and tattoos.

This cover’s blue theme serves as a nice contrast to the red cover of the first book and has basically convinced me that each cover in this series will be a different color and likely feature a different character. (Which is something of a change from Maas’ other books, which all tend to feature the female lead of the respective series.)

The official description indicates that Bryce and Hunt will find themselves drawn into the brewing rebellion against the Asteri, the powerful beings who rule the planet from the Eternal City in Pangera.

"Bryce Quinlan and Hunt Athalar have made a pact. As they process the events of the Spring they will keep things … platonic … until the Solstice. But can they resist when the crackling tension between them is enough to set the whole of Crescent City aflame? And they are not out of danger yet. Dragged into a rebel movement they want no part of, Bryce, Hunt and their friends find themselves pitted against the terrifying Asteri – whose notice they must avoid at all costs. But as they learn more about the rebel cause, they face a choice: stay silent while others are oppressed, or fight. And they’ve never been very good at staying silent. In this sexy, action-packed sequel to the #1 bestseller House of Earth and Blood, Sarah J. Maas weaves a captivating story of a world about to explode – and the people who will do anything to save it."

What that all actually means, of course, is anyone’s guess, though Maas herself claims that the sequel contains “500% more sex!” than its predecessor. (I look forward to someone working out the math on this once this book is released!)
