November TV release: The Wheel of Time – Amazon Prime Video

The first season of Amazon’s long-awaited big-budget version of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time fantasy series – which spans 14 novels (!) and was actually finished by author Brandon Sanderson after Jordan’s death – arrives this month, and it looks like it’s going to turn out to be well worth the wait.

Showrunner Rafe Judkins has been tapped to adapt this sprawling story for a modern-day audience, and his take aims to offer its female characters more agency and less braid pulling, diversify Jordan’s Wheel of Time world, and explain its intricate lore and internal mythology viewers who may not be terribly familiar with it..

Rosamund Pike stars as Moraine Damodred, a member of the powerful female order known as the Aes Sedai, beings who can channel the One Power, a.k.a., use magic. Her journey will take her and her Warder, Lan, to the small village of the Two Rivers, where she’ll ultimately be joined by a group of five young men and women, any one of whom could be turn out to be the mysterious Dragon Reborn – the child of an ancient prophecy who has the power to either save or destroy the world.

The eight-episode first season premieres on Amazon on November 19, but the series has already been renewed for a second outing, which is currently in production, so the adventure is only just beginning.
