Where are all the sexy Halloween romance books?
Holidays are romantic. It feels like the holidays focus more and more on love every year aside from Halloween. As beloved as Halloween is, there is a sore lack of romantic notions around Halloween. In regards to romance novels, it’s practically non-existent.
When people think of holiday romances Christmas is the biggest one. Whether it’s Hallmark movies, books, or songs, Christmas is a heavy-hitter. Followed by Valentine’s Day, romance isn’t really present in any other major holiday.
Rather than focusing on Christmas and Valentine’s Day as the big romantic days, it’s time for romance authors to band together to show Halloween some love. Within the last few years, Halloween has really become its own thing. Before, people were just celebrating on the 31st of October and moving on. Now, Halloween has become a larger part of the pop culture landscape.
It would only be right to see Halloween finally get its turn. That’s not to say there aren’t any good Halloween romance books out there. There are. But when will all authors finally realize how fun and sexy this holiday can be? Romance has evolved so much as a genre and Halloween should be the next great holiday frontier for writers to conquer.
When will Halloween get its own subgenre of romance books?
As mentioned above, there are definitely some good Halloween romances out there. For the most part, though, the romances are indies. Basically, the authors publish the romances themselves rather than going through a traditional publishing house. The only downside of indie publishing is whether your book will be noticed or not. Depending on how popular the author is, it can be hard to find the audience.
With that being said, there are a few indie Halloween romances that deserve a shout-out. There is the “Boos and Booze” series by various Black love authors on Kindle Unlimited. Then there is another Black Love series, “A Tale of Two Cities” which focuses on major holidays by Alexandra Warren and two Black Love novellas by Shae Sanders. Last but not least is G.G. Andrew’s “Crazy, Sexy Ghoulish” series.
There is no reason why traditional publishing shouldn’t focus on Halloween romances. The door is literally wide-open for any ideas the authors might have. In particular, costumes can play a huge part in making a scene sexy. Then there’s the idea of doing something risque in a place like a haunted house, pumpkin patch, or even, not knowing who is under a costume. Those are just some random ideas, but authors would have a field day considering the lack of Halloween romances.
Looking at all the popular movies, almost all of them have a great romance. The Addams Family has Gomez and Morticia. The Nightmare Before Christmas gave us Jack and Sally, an iconic Halloween duo. Corpse Bride features multiple romances while both Casper and Hocus Pocus have romantic subplots. Even movies such as Nightmare on Elm Street, The Conjuring, and Scream have a romantic subplot in them.
While this holiday is mostly known for being spooky, authors have a chance to make it a spookily sexy holiday. Thankfully, it does seem like authors are finally trying to shift the conversation. In 2021, there is a major uptick in witchy romance books including “Payback’s A Witch” by Lana Harper, “The Ex Hex” by Erin Sterling, and “Witch Please” by Ann Aguirre.
Hopefully, by this time next year, we’ll be seeing more traditional published romance books. If not, the world of indie publishing will save us. With all the love and excitement around the month, it’s only right for the romance publishing world to step it up.
