HBO’s The Last of Us series has fans of the series tentatively excited. Video game adaptations on TV or movies don’t have a stellar track record of being very good.

But HBO seems to be pouring money into this new series. And it’s hard to keep expectations tempered when we finally have our first look at the two main characters.

Take a look at Neil Druckmann’s tweet for the first look:

It’s nothing too revealing, but it looks like it’s a screenshot directly from the game itself. To see Naughty Dog’s creative director so absolutely stoked makes it even more exciting, especially when the cast is so stellar. It’s good to know they’ll be in the same outfits as in the game!

All that being said, hopes are relatively high for this adaptation. With Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, the acting should be on point. Druckmann’s involvement with the series and having Craig Mazin (creator of Chernobyl) at the helm has us hoping for a high quality show.

Of course, we have yet to see any other characters (personally I’m stoked for Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Joel’s brother)… or really the front of Joel and Ellie to see how good Pascal and Ramsey are.

Plus we have plenty of questions about the content. Are we following the video game beat for beat? Will we get even more backstory with Joel and his daughter Sarah before things go south? With a series like this, there’s plenty of room to play with the entire world of the game, not just Joel’s path.

While we see plenty of the world in both The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II, there’s so much more that can be explored. Having an episode giving us more background on the Fireflies (the revolutionary militia group) would be cool or seeing new locations in the world. They don’t need to take the same path as in the game.

At the very least, please tell me we’ll get that jaw-dropping giraffe scene from the first game. That’s all I ask for, HBO.
