Cloning is always a hot button issue. The moral dilemmas and the socioeconomic dilemmas alone are enough fodder for a great story, but Matthew Fitzsimmons takes things to the next level in a world not too far ahead of where we are now. In Constance, cloning is possible and wealthy people have bodies ready for when they pass. They must upload their consciousness every so often so that their clones are as current as possible.

Constance never wanted a clone but her eccentric aunt is one of the top scientists behind cloning and she gifted clones to all of Constance’s family members. One day Constance goes in for her periodic upload and when she wakes up almost two years have passed and she can’t remember anything. The only thing she does know is that her original body is dead and she’s the clone.

Something happened in those 18 months and Constance wants answers. The problem is that she’s not the only one who wants answers and the people who are after her will stop at nothing to get them.

Fitzsimmons creates a world full of plausibility in this future dystopian adventure. Cloning is not a new technology but it’s new enough that there are people who don’t trust it. Clones don’t have rights in many states because they’re not viewed as real people even though the system is  designed to pass seamlessly from the original to the clone upon an original’s death.

The story is enhanced with Constance’s own doubts about the system and the process. Though her aunt is wealthy and well-known, Constance barely makes enough money to survive after a devastating accident threw her world into chaos. When she wakes up and finds herself in this position she’s wary of everyone around her because they’re all after something and she can’t trust anyone.
