Star Trek Day introduced new members of the ‘Strange New Worlds’ crew but what about Kirk?
It’s a good time to be a Trekkie since we are awash in Trek content. But of all the series hitting our television (or iPad/iPhone) screens, the one I’m most excited about is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. SNW will follow the adventures of Captain Kirk’s mentor, the admirable Captain Christopher Pike (an inspired Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), and young Spock (Ethan Peck).
Pike, Number One, and Peck’s Spock, are familiar to Trekkies from Star Trek: Discovery and their seamless camaraderie has already resonated with audiences. So much so, that excitement has been brewing for a while for the three charismatic characters to helm their own series.
Well, that day is descending upon us and for fans of The Original Series and The Next Generation, Strange New Worlds will feel more like comfort viewing. Like its predecessors, SNW episodes will serve as standalone chapters and the episodic feel of Strange New Worlds will follow the TOR and TNG structure.
Permission to come aboard
Star Trek Day gave Trekkie fans a massive treat with the reveal of the remaining crew members to come aboard the USS Enterprise. And there are some familiar names among the bunch.
Celia Rose Gooding takes on Lieutenant Nyota Uhura. Jess Bush will be playing Nurse Christine Chapel and Babs Olusanmokun will give us a young Doctor M’Benga. Joining them are Christina Chong as La’an Noonien Singh, Melissa Navia as Lt. Erica Ortegas, and Bruce Horak as Hemmer. The new crew members had the chance to introduce themselves during the Strange New Worlds panel.
You can see portraits of each of the new legacy characters here.
What about a very young Kirk?
Since Pike plays such a big part in Captain James Kirk’s narrative, the potential to introduce a very young Kirk is an open question even more so, since Strange New Worlds features an early Spock. Could the series be setting up the reveal of James Kirk at some point? There are some theories along the timing.
So far, there doesn’t seem to be any plans for that eventuality, but it certainly would be an exciting development.
Premiere date for Strange New Worlds
Unlike Star Trek properties Picard, Prodigy and Discovery, Strange New Worlds did not unveil a premiere date yet. But we can deduce that it will likely come out after those shows air and expect it around Spring or Summer of 2022—keep a placeholder for that!
Side note: I firmly believe that SNW has the best costumes among all the Trek series, am I right? (and it’s not just that Anson Mount looks damn good in his. OK, maybe it is, but seriously, they all look great).
