Leslie Vedder’s debut novel The Bone Spindle is still a few months from hitting shelves but the industry is already buzzing about this upcoming fantasy adventure that’s a gender-swapped retelling of Sleeping Beauty, with a dash of Indiana Jones mixed in for good measure

I mean, this description basically had me at “gender-swapped fairytale retelling”, but the story also sounds like a ton of fun. More romantic adventure tales please, publishing industry!

The Bone Spindle follows the story of Fi, a bookish treasure hunter who doesn’t believe in anything as intangible as love. Her partner Shane is the muscle of their group, a warrior from the north who likes pretty women as much as she likes getting her own way.

Curses are just so much ancient history to them both – until Fi pricks her finger on a bone spindle while excavating a long-lost ruin and awakens the spirit of Briar Rose, a prince who’s been waiting a hundred years to be free of the sleeping curse that binds him.

Stuck with the prince until she can figure out a way to break his curse, Fi and Shane will have to face down dark magic, witch hunters, and the prospect of true love.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a while to read The Bone Spindle for ourselves – it’s not due to be released until January 2022.

But we can exclusively reveal a first look at the novel’s absolutely gorgeous cover, which is not only beautiful to look at but has some distinct Tomb Raider vibes going on. (It’s the whip that does it for me, folks!)

The novel is described as Sorcery of Thorns and All The Stars and Teeth, a fast-paced adventure with romance, a found family, and plenty of snark.

The Bone Spindle won’t hit shelves until early 2022, but you don’t have to wait that long – we’ve got an exclusive excerpt for you right now!
