The Walking Dead: Origins kicks off with Daryl Dixon’s backstory

The premiere of The Walking Dead’s final season is quickly approaching, but it’s been a while since fans had any new TWD content. To give viewers some new stories and drop a few sneak peeks ahead of season 11, AMC is releasing a series of four one-off episodes that will dive deep into the backstories of some of the most popular The Walking Dead characters.

TWD: Origins episodes will only be available on AMC+, so fans will have to subscribe to AMC’s streaming service to see the new episodes. But each installment will also feature bonus content like interviews with the cast, a look back at some of the character’s pivotal moments through the show’s history, and exclusive sneak peeks at the upcoming The Walking Dead season 11.

The Walking Dead: Origins starts on Thursday, July 15 with a look at Daryl Dixon’s backstory. Daryl has had an amazing journey since the beginning of TWD and it will be fascinating to see how he escaped the fate of his brother Merle and didn’t become a caricature.

The other backstories will be released each week on Thursday as part of AMC’s series of special Thursday reveals leading up to The Walking Dead season 11 premiere.

What will The Walking Dead: Origins involve?

One of the season 10 bonus episodes, “Here’s Negan” already revealed the story of how Negan became his apocalypse self after the death of his wife, Lucille. So his upcoming origin story may get into how he found the Saviors and eventually became their leader.

It will be interesting to see if Maggie’s origin story focuses on her life before Rick, Glenn, and the other burst onto the Greene family farm or if it shows fans what Maggie’s life has been like since she took baby Hershel and left the Hilltop.

It’s almost impossible to imagine any back story for Maggie that doesn’t involve the Greene family patriarch, Hershel. But the venerable Scott Wilson who made Hershel the beloved father figure of the entire fandom passed away several years ago.

If Maggie’s story contains any flashbacks to the farm or Hershel or to her younger sister Beth it will be bittersweet for fans to remember that era of The Walking Dead. Season two feels like it was a very long time ago.

The Walking Dead: Origins limited series is just one of many extras that AMC is giving fans during the countdown to TWD’s final season. Every Thursday AMC reveals new season 11 content in some form like teasers or photos.

And the full The Walking Dead season 11 trailer will be revealed during TWD’s panel at SDCC on Saturday, July 24th. All of The Walking Dead universe shows will have panels that day with new trailers, sneak peeks, and a lot more information about the upcoming seasons of TWDU shows.
