Watch Tom Hiddleston in: I Saw the Light (2015)
When I think about who I would cast in a biopic of country singer Hank Williams, Hiddleston is not the first person who comes to mind. But he does an excellent job in the role in an otherwise unspectacular film.
This film was written, directed, and produced by Marc Abraham and based on the book Hank Williams: The Biography by Colin Escott, William MacEwen, and George Merritt. It focuses mainly on Williams’s rocky first marriage to Audrey, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, the MCU’s very own Wanda Maximoff.
I Saw the Light also depicts Williams’s rise to fame, his struggles with alcoholism, and his eventual divorce. Cherry Jones plays Wiliams’s mother, Lillie, who was often locked in a power struggle with his wife Audrey.
It’s a bit jarring to see the British Hiddleston doing a (pretty decent) Southern accent. Hiddleston did his own singing and guitar playing for the film, proving that he has a multitude of talents.
Olsen and Hiddleston’s performances are easily the best thing about the film, which otherwise struggles a bit to find its bearings. But it’s absolutely worth watching just to see Hiddleston singing old-fashioned country music like “Hey Good Lookin’” and “Honky Tonkin’” while wearing a cowboy hat.
