Watch Tom Hiddleston in: Coriolanus (2014)
This one is cheating a bit, because it’s not an actual movie, but one of Hiddleston’s best performances is in the filmed production of Shakespeare’s play Coriolanus. Hiddleston has had an impressive career on the stage, in both London and New York, in addition to his television and film work.
Since there is a recorded version of one of those performances and because Hiddleston feels so tied to Shakespeare, it felt right to include it.
This National Theatre Live recording of the Donmar Warehouse production was directed by Josie Rourke, whose recent film directing debut was Mary Queen of Scots starring Saoirse Ronan. The filmed version was originally streamed to movie theatres, but is now available on the National Theatre Live at Home streaming service.
Hiddleston plays the titular role of Coriolanus, or Caius Marcius, brilliantly in an intimate and brutal production that also features familiar faces like Mark Gatiss and Alfie Enoch. Coriolanus is not performed as often as some of Shakespeare’s other plays, but is a fascinating tale of a Roman leader’s rise to fame and fall from glory.
Hiddleston does an excellent job, not only of making Shakespeare’s language sound entirely natural, but of bringing a stunning intensity to the role.
