Watch Tom Hiddleston in: War Horse (2011)
Hiddleston has a brief, but impactful role in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse as a World War I army officer, Captain James Nicholls. Written by Lee Hall and Richard Curtis, the film is based on the 1982 novel by Michael Morpurgo and its stage play adaptation.
In addition to Hiddleston, the large ensemble cast includes Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, and Jeremy Irvine in his film debut. It also features Benedict Cumberbatch, the MCU’s Doctor Strange, as Nicholls’s colleague, Major Stewart.
War Horse follows the story of a horse named Joey who has a strong bond with his owner, Albert (Irvine). The two are separated when World War I begins and Joey becomes Captain Nicholls’s cavalry horse. The film shows the many lives that Joey affects over the course of the war and the way in which he and Albert are eventually reunited.
The scene in which Captain Nicholls is part of the first charge of cavalry against German machine-gun fire is one of the most horrifying and touching of the whole film. The shock and fear that transform Hiddleston’s face expertly show how unprepared the British were for the Germans’ advanced technology at the beginning of the war.
