The Bold Type: Jacqueline takes the weights

The first season of The Bold Type is a near-masterpiece, and it’s season finale, titled “Carry the Weight,” is no exception. The character growth exhibited among the three leads in just ten episodes is extraordinary. Jane leaves Scarlet for (what she thinks will be) greener pastures, Kat embarks an adventure to South America with Adena, and Sutton is finally ready to step up as a Scarlet stylist. The most powerful moment, though, goes to Jacqueline Carlyle.

What started out as being Jane’s first article for Scarlet, turned out to be her last (for now), and was about Mia, a sexual assault survivor who sets up a protest for awareness in Central Park by physically holding on to the weights of Lady Justice. As Jane interviews her, Mia states that only another sexual assault survivor can take her place, in order to keep the protest going. Leaving a Scarlet party, the girls join Mia in protest by standing with her, even though none of them can take the weights.

Jacqueline sees what the girls are doing via social media and leaves the party herself. As she steps into frame to join the circle that Kat, Sutton, and Jane have formed around Mia, she slowly and silently steps forward, taking the weights from Mia. Accompanied by the moving feminist anthem “Quiet” by Milck, this scene will give you goosebumps every time.
