The Bold Type: Kat owns her sexuality
Once Kat met Adena, we all knew that she would probably turn out to be something other than straight. During, and after, her relationship with Adena, Kat continued to date and be interested in women, assuming that she is a lesbian. However, in season four, Kat finds herself attracted to a man once more.
At a loss for how to deal with her seemingly indecisive sexuality, she turns to Oliver for help. She talks about she is shunned by Adena and her lesbian friends once they found out about Kat being attracted to a man, which leads to a heartfelt discussion between Kat and Oliver about bi-erasure. Bi-erasure is something that happens all too frequently in real life, but rarely depicted in the media, so it’s nice to have a light shown on this topic.
We empathize with Kat, who basically just wants to be attracted to whoever she is attracted to, no matter what the social consequences may be. She has a hard time understanding why that’s so difficult for everyone to get, and we feel her frustration. Oliver is candid about coming into his own sexuality, thus helping Kat come to terms with who she is.
