The Bold Type: Sutton chooses her career over Richard

Sutton and Richard were hot n’ heavy during the majority of season one, mostly because they were keeping their relationship a secret, since Sutton was an assistant at the magazine Richard was a board member of. It even took some time for Sutton to confide in Kat and Jane about her romance with him. Of course, happy couples don’t make for good dramatic television, so problems were bound to arise.

Following the season one finale, in which Richard agrees to make their relationship official by taking Sutton out on a real first date, the season two premiere almost immediately throws a kink in their plans. While preparing to go to HR to sign paperwork acknowledging their relationship, Sutton has second thoughts because she is worried what other people in the industry will think. Between their age difference and their difference standings within the company, Sutton worried that she would always be seen as Richard’s girlfriend, no matter how much personal success she achieved.

Righting the wrongs of Andy’s choice in The Devil Wears Prada, Sutton chooses to pursue her career as a stylist over continuing a relationship with Richard. Although they would eventually get back together (of course!), this was nevertheless a huge defining moment for Sutton’s character. She had come such a long way in believing in herself that she was willing to lose the man she loved in order to achieve her goals.
