The Bold Type: Kat discusses being bi-racial with her parents

Kat has always been the most complex character on The Bold Type. Jane was the cautiously optimistic one, Sutton was the free spirit, and Kat was the realist. As a bisexual woman of bi-racial heritage, Kat often struggled with her true identity throughout the course of the series.

Early in season 2, once things had gotten serious between herself and Adena, Kat sits down with her parents to talk about her racial identity. Race can be a difficult thing to discuss in a fictional television series setting, but this scene was handled with grace and honesty. Dee gives an emotional performance of someone who is trying to get her parents to open up about a sensitive subject, but one that is important to her, nonetheless.

Unfortunately, you con’t see much depiction of biracial families on television these days. Shows like Mixed-ish have touched on it, but the things that come with being biracial are often trivialized in an effort to make the conversation more humorous, and not quite as heavy. The Bold Type wasn’t afraid to tackle this important conversation head-on.
