The Bold Type: Jacqueline’s 60th Anniversary toast
The Bold Type achieved something that very few shows ever dream of doing: it nailed it’s very first episode. From the tone to the look to the characterization, season 1, episode 1 set the standard for the entire run of the series. Much of what the show would go on to be about is covered in Jacqueline’s speech at the 60th Anniversary of Scarlet magazine party.
While we had already been introduced to Kat, Sutton, and Jane earlier in the episode, this was the moment we got to see just what kind of a character Jacqueline Carlyle is. She is brave, fearless, caring, and honest. Everything you’d want in a boss and/or mentor. Hardin’s delivery of this speech was the icing on the cake for many viewers, making them forever fans of the show then and there.
The speech that Jacqueline gives in the series finale mirrors this scene in a lot of ways. The girls are still dispersed throughout the crowd, yet stronger and closer than ever before. Jacqueline, who had been a part of Scarlet magazine just as much as Scarlet magazine had been a part of her, was at peace with leaving the magazine in the hands of Kat, Sutton, and Jane.
