The Bold Type: Tiny Jane sings “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia
Following the news that Jane has to start thinking about whether or not she wants children since she is a carrier of the BRCA gene mutation, and Sutton’s need to return home for a copy of her birth certificate, prompt a road trip to Sutton’s hometown of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. As Kat and Sutton watch from the audience, drunk Jane heads to the stage to belt out a rendition of the 90s hit “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia.
There are so many great things about this scene from season two. Sutton’s trepidation about seeing her problematic mother Babs, the waitress flirting with Kat, Sutton’s face while the flirting is going on, and Jane’s performance. For a Type-A character who isn’t used to not being in control, seeing Jane finally let loose is cathartic not only for the character but for the viewing audience as well.
Stevens, who sings in real life and was once a contestant on American Idol, does an amazing job of singing while also portraying Jane’s relief breathing a little and relaxing. The girls would go on to perform several more musical numbers throughout the series, including this karaoke moment from season 2.
