New AppleTV+ dramedy Physical arrives on the streaming platform next month, and if the series’ first teaser is anything to go by, this show is set to fill the 1980s-themed hole that the early cancellation of GLOW has left in all our hearts.

The half-hour dark comedy stars Rose Byrne as Sheila Rubin, a seemingly dutiful, though quietly tortured housewife living within the idyllic yet fragile beach paradise of 1980s San Diego. Publicly, Sheila supports her smart but controversial husband, as he makes a bid for state assembly. But behind closed doors, she has her own darkly comedic take on life that she rarely lets the world see.

Battling a complex set of personal demons related to her self-image, Sheila finds a necessary release in the world of aerobics. Subsequently, she finds herself on a road to real empowerment, as she merges her passion for the exercise with the burgeoning technology of videotape to start a revolutionary business. The series tracks her transformation from a stifled, overlooked enabler to a confident and powerful lifestyle guru-someone we take for granted today, but who was entirely radical in her time. Legwarmers, big hair, and all.

Created by About a Boy’s Annie Weisman, the series also stars Scovel, Dierdre Friel, Della Saba, Lou Taylor Pucci, Paul Sparks, and Ashley Liao.

Byrne is probably best known for her Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated performance as Ellen Parsons on the critically acclaimed FX legal thriller Damages, but her most recent roles have generally tended to be comedic ones, including such hits as Bridesmaids, Spy, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, and Juliet, Naked.

The first three installments of Physical will drop on June 18, followed by a weekly release for the remainder of the series ten-episode first season.

Next. Sebastian Stan is game to play Bucky Barnes as long as Marvel Studios wants him to. dark
