The Walking Dead just wrapped up an extended season 10 with one of the highest-rated episodes they have ever created, “Here’s Negan.” The Walking Dead season 11, which is the last season for the record-setting apocalypse drama, is already filming and will return this summer.

It was announced recently that The Walking Dead season 11 will premiere on Sunday, Aug. 22 on AMC. That’s very early for the show, which usually premieres in October each year.

Last year the show was unable to film because of the pandemic so after a delay they created six bonus episodes for season 10 to give fans some new content even though it wasn’t possible to film a regular season.

But now the show has returned to filming with appropriate safeguards and is well into filming season 11. Because season 11 is the last season of the show the episodes are bigger and more intense and are taking a little bit longer to film than they used to. But the show will have new episodes ready to go on Aug. 22.

The Walking Dead season 11 schedule

Since the final season is starting in August and not in October it may be the case that fans will get the equivalent of a full season without any breaks at all. The final season of The Walking Dead is going to be 24 episodes instead of a usual 16 episode season, and those final episodes are very likely going to lead directly into the upcoming Carol and Daryl spinoff as well as the Rick Grimes feature films.

So it’s possible that new episodes of The Walking Dead season 11 will air every Sunday from Aug. 22 straight through until Dec. 5, which is around the time that the show usually goes on midseason hiatus. If that’s the case then the show would return in February or March to drop the last eight episodes of the show which would put the series finale in March or April of 2022.

What’s next after The Walking Dead season 11?

In addition to The Walking Dead fans will have new seasons of Fear The Walking Dead and TWD: World Beyond coming up so it’s possible that at some point all three shows could be airing at the same time. That’s good news for fans who can’t get enough of the apocalyptic world and the riveting characters that inhabit it.

While you’re waiting for the final season of The Walking Dead to drop this summer don’t miss Fear The Walking Dead season 6B which starts on Sunday, April 11. Join me on Twitter each week to live-tweet each new episode with the rest of TWD Family.
