Fans have been eagerly awaiting James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad since the project was first announced, and each tidbit of news has been welcomed with open arms. It’s not surprising, then, that the red band trailer for the movie shattered a record for most watched red band trailer with over 150 million views in its first week.

Mortal Kombat previously held the record for most views for a red band trailer in a week with over 116 million views.

A red band trailer is the nickname for trailers that have been given an R-rating. When the first trailer for The Suicide Squad was released in March, the movie hadn’t been given a rating yet. Now that it’s officially rated-R, the trailer has to be labeled as such on YouTube so that children are blocked from the content.

Given that the trailer is blocked for a large swath of viewers limited by the age restriction, the impressive number of views speaks volumes about how excited fans are for the movie.

Excitement builds for The Suicide Squad

Gunn, an avid comic book fan, lovingly developed a script that would capture the essence of DC’s band of misfit villains turned heroes. Instead of focusing on the big names, he opted to incorporate a large number of lesser-known villains from across the DC universe into the movie along with modern-era Suicide Squad staples like Harley Quinn and Rick Flag.

The red band trailer goes all-in with its violence and f-bomb, signaling that this version of the Squad is darker and down to business in a way not seen in David Ayer’s 2016 version of the movie. (Though in truth no one knows what Ayer’s version really looks like because there is no Ayer cut)

Next. Mortal Kombat, The Nevers and everything else coming to HBO Max in April. dark

The Suicide Squad will hit theaters and HBO Max on August 6. It will be featured on HBO Max for 30 days before returning solely to a theatrical release. A Peacemaker spinoff to air on HBO Max, starring John Cena, has already been announced.
