Podcasts to escape with: Thirst Aid Kit with Nichole Perkins and Bim Adewunmi

If you love talking about your celebrity crushes, and you feel so strongly about them that you have to write some fan fiction, then this is the podcast for you! T

hirst Aid Kit is hosted by Bim Adewunmi and Nichole Perkins.  Each episode focuses on a celebrity crush they are thirsting for or a type of man that several celebrities fall under. Nichole and Bim thirst over the superficial parts of an actor like their hair or arms, but they also look at the person’s career, work ethic, and personality. Some of the objects of their thirst, which is what they often call the men they are focusing on, are well-known actors or singers, but sometimes they are men that are not as popular; however, there is something special about these men that makes them worthy of being thirsted over. Nicole and Bim also think deeply about the objects of their thirst. Why are we attracted to the tall, super masculine white man? Why do I feel like I can trust this man? Some of the men they focus on are men of color or uniquely attractive men that don’t get mainstream attention.

The way Bim and Nichole describe how these crushes make them feel is hilarious and weirdly specific. Bim talks about wanting to reach for a cigarette and exhale with her full body after seeing a romantic James McCavoy monologue, or how Nichole breathlessly talks about how good John Cho looks wearing a masculine watch. Their dragged-out, vocal exhales after revisiting a titillating scene and busting out laughing from the embarrassment of having such intense feelings over a person they never met is relatable. The episode ends with each host reading a drabble they wrote, a short fan fiction piece inspired by the thirst object of the episode. Listeners got to vote on the best drabble via Twitter, but the hosts make sure that we know they are both winners no matter the poll results.

The real joy you take from Thirst Aid Kit is hearing these two friends unabashedly talk about their crushes. They vacillate between being giggly teenagers and naughty aunties, which they often call themselves, being inappropriately suggestive. Teenage girls are judged as being boy crazy and women are shamed when they talk about their desires. It’s nice that there is a space to express a very human feeling. Unfortunately, this podcast is no longer putting out episodes, but you can still hear it on various podcast platforms. If you miss their work, Bim Adewunmi is a producer on This American Life, and Nichole Perkins has a new podcast out called This is Good For You.
