Following the nonstop twists and turns of last week’s episode of Batwoman, this week promises a return to form as Ryan continues protecting Gotham’s streets, this time from a well-known DC Comics villain: Black Mask. Although the promo for “Rule #1” only offers a brief glimpse of him, it’s enough to have DC fans excited about the appearance. Unfortunately, Black Mask may not be the only problem to contend.

The preview also sees tensions between Ryan and Angelique at an all-time high, suggesting Angelique may have gotten herself wrapped up in Black Mask’s crimes somehow.

Per the official synopsis, Ryan’s feelings for Angelique may impact her promise to uphold Batwoman’s legacy, along with her relationship with Luke and Mary:

"Batwoman (Javicia Leslie) confronts Gotham’s biggest foe, while new information forces those closest to Kate to make some difficult decisions. Ryan’s feelings for Angelique (guest star Bevin Bru) puts her partnership with Luke (Camrus Johnson) and Mary (Nicole Kang) at risk, while Alice (Rachel Skarsten) goes on a warped walk down memory lane."

Given how Ryan and Mary have bonded in previous episodes, it’s painful watching Mary threaten to call the cops on her new friend — and we have to hope it doesn’t come to that.

Although the promo doesn’t show it, it sounds like “Rule #1” will also show the aftermath of Alice’s journey to Coryana. After discovering that Kate is still MIA — supposedly dead — and killing Ocean (or so she thinks), it’s not likely Alice is going to be in a very great headspace heading into this week’s episode. The fallout isn’t something fans will want to miss out on.
