The trailer for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad offers up a closer look at the massive cast coming together for the highly anticipated movie. Gunn’s trademark humor can be seen throughout the film as this motley crue tries to complete a mission and avoid having their heads blown up.

Fans get a closer look at King Shark, voiced to perfection by Sylvester Stallone, Idris Elba’s Bloodsport and John Cena’s Peacemaker, along with Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), Savant (Michael Rooker), Weasel (Sean Gunn), Blackguard (Pete Davidson) and many others. Peter Capaldi’s Thinker also has a fun appearance in the trailer.

The trailer is a glorious abundance of explosions, laughs and WTF moments that don’t exactly explain what the plot is, which doesn’t even matter because it’s well known that the Suicide Squad gets called in to deal with impossible missions with impossible risks. That’s what they’re doing in the trailer, and they look great doing it.

The Suicide Squad isn’t a sequel or a reboot to the 2016 film

Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) are the only members of the cast to return after 2016’s Suicide Squad from director David Ayer.

Gunn’s version isn’t a reboot and it’s not a sequel, it’s somewhere in between and it’s meant to introduce a vast assortment of new characters who have never been seen in the DC Universe. Though many of Gunn’s characters won’t survive the mission (and thus won’t likely be seen in sequels), it’s fun seeing the diverse Squad in all its glory.

If you’re not familiar with DC Comics’ Suicide Squad, they’re a group of villains who have been coerced (through threat of an explosive death) to go on missions where the odds of survival are close to nil, hence the term “suicide squad.” The carrot that motivates them to work with Amanda Waller (Davis) instead of killing her is that she has planted an explosive in their heads that can be detonated at any time, thus preventing subterfuge.
