The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the most watched Disney+ premiere to date

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier may have only been out for a week but the latest television entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is already breaking records.

According to a Disney+ press release, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the most-watched series premiere ever for the streaming service during its opening weekend. Granted, Disney+ hasn’t been around that long, but it does mean that the first episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier surpassed recent Marvel hit WandaVision as well as the premieres of both seasons of Star Wars spinoff The Mandalorian.

Sounds fancy, huh?

Of course, Disney provided no numbers to back up these claims or put them in further context. But that’s not terribly unusual – most streamers are pretty vague about their stats and are loathe to release hard metrics. Netflix, for example, loves to tout how many millions of households stream their series during their initial weeks of release, but their definition of “stream” is so wide (anyone who watches just two minutes of a program) as to occasionally feel meaningless. And there’s no telling how Disney might be calibrating its internal metrics.

Still and all, though, it’s an impressive debut – and one none of us should really be that shocked by.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier follows the stories of Sam Wilson a.k.a. The Falcon and Bucky Barnes a.k.a. The Winter Soldier, as Steve Rogers’ former best friends both wrestle with the legacy he left behind and try to forge a way forward after the Blip and the events of Avengers: Endgame. The mix of high octane action and rich character work – focused on two fan-favorite sidekicks – was always going to be a big draw for MCU fans around the world.

The series premiere of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is now streaming on Disney+.
