While it is one year into the pandemic, Spring travel seems to have blossomed. Although travelers have various limitations, the reality is that people are venturing outside of their confines. From a theme park visit to a beach getaway, it appears that the wanderlust feeling is being satisfied by many.

Although health and safety measures are still paramount, there is a vast difference in travel in the past month. From seniors planning their post-vaccine trip to students taking that Spring Break rite of passage, many popular tourist destinations are more crowded than ever. Although the cruise industry is still on pause, other Spring travel is seeing a boost.

As reported by Orlando International Airport, the recent passenger crowds are the highest in recent memory. Disney has reported that theme park reservations are at capacity for the week. Universal is predicting that its theme parks will reach capacity. All signs point to the idea that Spring travel has returned.

Even though this news is important for the travel industry and does provide a sense of hope for light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, the reality is that caution needs to temper the excitement. It is more than just grabbing that unworn swim suit from a year ago and jumping into the travel pool with both feet.

While most destinations are regulating health and safety measures, travelers need to be thoughtful with their own choices. Beyond wearing masks, washing hands and all the other concepts that have become part of the daily routine, travelers need to appreciate that the new environment is different.

Although maybe not the best analogy, think about a new animal being introduced into a non-native environment. Granted that cute muscovy duck looks great in the local pond, but how does it impact the local wildlife. Could it cause local wildlife to be damaged because it is not from the area?

A far-reaching analogy can be drawn to that idea. After a year of staying inside that “home bubble,” people have felt protected. Now, stepping into those large crowds, the reality is far different. Even though there is excitement around, the reality is caution needs to be headed.

As theme parks re-open, airports become busier and hotels are bustling, the Spring travel boom is apparent. While this scenario has positive aspects, the summer travel season could be even busier. While there may never be a “return to normal,” a journey outside of the house is more than likely.
