Shudder confirms A Discovery of Witches season 3 coming in 2022
As fans prepare for the season 2 finale of the Sky TV hit A Discovery of Witches, Shudder and Sundance Now confirm that the show will return for its third and final season in 2022. Filming for A Discovery of Witches season 3 wrapped in February and now the complicated post-production work will begin on the highly anticipated finale.
The announcement came as the season 2 finale aired in the UK on Friday ahead of Saturday morning’s release in the United States.
Though fans long suspected season 3 would return in early 2022, following the same path as the first two seasons, this was the first time the news was confirmed and now the countdown to the end of the series officially begins.
A Discovery of Witches season 3 to be the final season…unless it isn’t
A Discovery of Witches is based on the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. The trilogy was optioned by Sky TV in the UK and produced by Bad Wolf, and it airs on the AMC family of networks in the US.
Though ADOW is based on three books, there is now a fourth book, Time’s Convert, in the series and Harkness is working on a fifth book.
Given ADOW’s popularity both in the UK and in the US, it seems like Time’s Convert would be made into a series, too, and it very well could be. At the moment, the plan seems to be for the All Souls Trilogy to reach its conclusion and then perhaps the announcement for the series’ future will come.
The challenge in moving ADOW past three seasons is securing the cast for another year. Many of the actors would be needed to film Time’s Convert and after COVID-19 disrupted filming schedules actors are stuck having to choose between finishing one series and starting another. That very thing happened to ADOW’s Trystan Gravelle, who will not appear in season 3 because he had to choose between ADOW and Lord of the Rings.
With the announcement that A Discovery of Witches season 3 is coming in 2022, it’s time to start pushing for Time’s Convert and Harkness’ fifth book to be optioned as well before the cast takes on other roles. It would be a shame not to see the story reach its full conclusion.
