Friday nights are always a little weird when it comes to the news cycle. Celebrities and politicians release news on Fridays in hopes that they will be buried quickly. (Kim K-W we’re looking at you) When it comes to President Joe Biden’s dogs, a clip from the Greg Kelly show on Newsmax captured the national interest and started trending when Kelly and his guests called out Biden’s senior German Shepherd Champ for being “unlike a presidential dog.”

Yeah. You read that right. Newsmax pundits were attacking Biden’s 12-year old German Shepherd, Champ. Champ Biden is the first dog to return to the White House, having visited when Biden was vice president during Barack Obama’s administration.

Naturally, clips of the video started going viral as social media users caught wind of the story, and it brought out the ire of dog lovers from all walks of life.

As a 12-year old German Shepherd, Champ Biden is like the equivalent of a Betty White in the dog world. Shepherds have an average life expectancy of 9-13 years, making Champ an elder statesman in canine circles.

Newsmax pundit suggests Joe Biden’s senior German Shepherd is not cared for

Kelly was joined by two presidential historians, Craig Shirley and Doug Wead, who proceeded to suggest that previous presidential dogs like the Clinton’s Buddy and George H. W. Bush’s Millie were better presidential dogs than Champ.

Kelly went so far as to suggest that Champ needed to be groomed and is suffering from a lack of love and care, belonging in a “junkyard” and not the White House.

As infuriating as Kelly’s remarks are, it’s even more infuriating to think that this conversation is happening during a global pandemic and a massive natural disaster happening in Texas. Just when you think you’ve seen the right-wing media at its lowest point, they continue to surprise you and this time they hit below the belt.

Thankfully, social media isn’t letting them get away with it and there’s a not-so-subtle lesson to be learned here: Don’t come for Champ unless you’re ready to face the wrath of Twitter.
