Riverdale figured out the perfect way to keep Archie and his friends in town
With the time jump that Season 5 of Riverdale gave us to age Archie and his friends by seven years, there was some question as to how the story would go on. And with Archie, Betty, Jughead, and Veronica scattered far and wide, away from their hometown, it was hard to figure out how they would explain these four not just coming home, but also sticking around.
Considering the careers of all four of our leading characters, it made sense that they were not back in Riverdale following graduation from college and the like. But with Hiram Lodge destroying the town once and for all, including doing whatever he could to get Riverdale High closed down, it actually made sense to learn that our dynamic foursome would be sticking around as teachers to help keep their school alive.
Archie was already planning to stick around since his commanding officer deliberately sent him back to Riverdale to reboot the ROTC program at the high school. And even Betty has a reason to stay in town longer, not only with her family still living in their old home but also the issues that her sister seems to be dealing with. (The last few moments Chapter Eighty-One: The Homecoming definitely gave us pause with Polly apparently running from her life from the same truck that whisked away the young woman from the last episode.)
However, with Jughead and Veronica, it actually made less sense for them to stay in Riverdale. For Jughead, his life may be a mess (from the looks of things), but it is clear that this is no longer really his home. And Veronica has a husband in New York and it definitely seems like her relationship with her father is as volatile as ever.
Riverdale finds a way to keep Archie and the gang in town longer
With Archie trying to help Toni keep the town alive, finding a way to keep everyone in this town seemed like it was going to be the biggest challenge ever. And while it probably is ridiculous to have these four teaching the young minds of Riverdale, in a lot of ways it also works.
Having them be teachers keeps the high school relevant and allows the show to have the group interact naturally. As an added bonus, it also gives us more of both Kevin and Toni, as well as Alice Cooper who is apparently part of the PTO or school board. (Can we also point out that Kevin confirmed that he and Fangs are still a thing and that would be nice to see more of too.)
It will be interesting to see how the show moves forward with everyone back together and working as teachers trying to rebuild Riverdale from the group up. With everyone back on even footing, it should be interesting to see how they keep the story fresh and focused, while also giving us what we all love about Riverdale.
Do you think it was a good idea to make Archie and his friends teachers? Does this make sense as a tool to keep everyone around? What do you want to see next? Tell us in the comments.
