Claudia Conway on American Idol isn’t a wholesome thing
Taking TikTok by storm, Claudia Conway has been posting fairly often about her family on the app in recent months. The young daughter of Kellyanne Conway took to frequently calling out her mother, the former counselor to President Donald Trump. From the ways her mother speaks to her and other aspects of her home life, the young woman was sharing the truth about her life with her followers.
As a result, it was quite shocking to see Claudia take to the American Idol stage this week, a moment which included a surprise appearance by her mother, congratulating her for making it through to the Hollywood round.
So why is it a big deal that the Conway family is getting attention this way?
Because it’s something we see frequently with (mainly) Republican children of these high-profile figures after their parents are no longer in the spotlight. It happened with Sarah Palin and her children, it happened with John McCain and his daughter Meghan, and now it is happening with Claudia and Kellyanne Conway.
As Variety points out, this American Idol stint aims to both exploit Kellyanne and Claudia’s celebrity status and turn them into an ordinary mother/daughter duo, despite the behavior we’ve seen from Kellyanne on the news and the world we’ve seen revealed in Claudia’s posts.
It’s disheartening because the show is trying to normalize everything that Kellyanne Conway did with Trump and is using Claudia and her audition to do so. Even if that’s not the intention of American Idol, that’s how it is coming off to audiences, and seeing how much Kellyanne Conway is going to be playing a part of Claudia’s audition process in the future is going to be extremely important.
