10 best female friendships in film from the past decade
By Shaun Stacy
Molly Davidson and Amy Antsler (Booksmart)
In this hilarious 2019 film, Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) are studious besties about to graduate from high school when they realize that all the other kids who partied got into the same prestigious schools they did. Vowing to make up for lost time, Molly and Amy embark on one final night of debauchery before graduating. The girls are determined to make it to the biggest high school party and prove to everyone that they were fun and smart. Both radical feminists, the film is an uproarious example of how far true friends will go for one another.
Molly is really the friend who wants to prove something, while Amy is more laidback and is fine with not having much of a social life. Amy, who is gay, spends the night trying to muster up the courage to speak to the girl she has a crush on, while Molly has a similar experience with a fellow member of student government. While the friends do end up getting in a huge fight at the party, it was all out of love and the two make up just in time to make it to their graduation ceremony.
The chemistry between Feldstein and Dever is electric, portraying one of the most revolutionary films about a coming-of-age female friendship. Even post-graduation, as the two begin different journeys apart from each other, they make you believe that their bond will last forever.
Booksmart was the directorial film debut of Olivia Wilde and she completely aced it with this story of unconditional friendship.
