As an intergalactic warrior hero, Captain Marvel‘s Vers (Brie Larson) traveled the galaxy and helped defeat the evil alien race called the Skrulls. However, not all is what it seems, as we learn that Vers is actually Carol Danvers, a former Air Force pilot who was in an accident that gave her extraordinary powers and brainwashed into fighting on the wrong side of a galactic war. Upon returning to Earth, Carol begins to remember bits and pieces of her life before the accident. This includes her friendship with her colleague Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), who also happens to be her best friend, as well as her mother-like relationship to Maria’s daughter, Monica.
As Carol struggles to come to terms with her jumbled memory, Maria is the one who helps ground her by reminding Carol of who she is. In one of the most poignant moments of the film, Maria declares, “You are Carol Danvers. You are the woman on that black box risking her life to do the right thing. My best friend, who supported me as a mother, and a pilot when no one else did. You’re smart, and funny, and a huge pain in the ass. And you are the most powerful person I know.”
While there has been speculation that Carol and Maria had a more intimate relationship, nothing has been confirmed. In Marvel’s WandaVision series, Monica (Teyonah Parris), whom Carol helped raise, is now an adult who returns from Thanos’ snap only to learn that her mother died while she was gone. In working with SWORD, a SHIELD-type intergalactic organization that her mother built, Monica appears to be resentful of Carol for some reason. The character of Monica Rambeau is slated to appear in the 2022 sequel, so something tells us there will be a reckoning between the two.
