10 best female friendships in film from the past decade
By Shaun Stacy
Jenny Young, Blair Helms, & Erin Kennedy (Someone Great)
We all know that the hallmark of any good friendship is how your friends support you following a bad breakup. That’s where we start off with Someone Great‘s Jenny Young (Gina Rodriguez): with her boyfriend of nine years breaking up with her because she is moving from New York City to San Francisco for her dream job.
After a quick video call with her besties Blair (Brittany Snow) and Erin (DeWanda Wise), Jenny and her friends agree to call in sick and have a great last night together before Jenny leaves for San Francisco. (It doesn’t get much more relatable than that.)
The chemistry between the three leads is off the charts and that translates fluently onscreen. Jenny, Blair, and Erin are unconditionally supportive of each other, but are also really honest about addressing problems in each other’s lives. Jenny just had her heart broken, Blair is stuck in an unhappy relationship with a dud, and Erin has a big fear of commitment — and they all know these things about one another.
These friends are not only there to celebrate the good times, but also call each other out with things get too out of hand. As one of the best Netflix rom-coms ever made, Someone Great posits the question: What if the great love of our lives is actually the love between friends?
