10 best female friendships in film from the past decade
By Shaun Stacy
Veronica Clarke and Bailey Butler (Unpregnant)
Unpregnant‘s Veronica Clarke (Haley Lu Richardson) and Bailey Butler (Barbie Ferreira) have a complicated relationship. Like with most teenagers, sometimes you don’t stay friends with the same people throughout those formative years.
In this instance, Veronica discovers that she is pregnant and doesn’t want to keep the baby. In her search for an abortion clinic, there are none in her home state of Missouri that allow procedures without parental permission. Backed into a wall, Veronica turns to her former BFF Bailey to take a road trip with her to Albuquerque so she can get one there.
This 2020 female buddy/road trip film flew under the radar, as it was released just before the COVID-19 shutdown of Hollywood. Based on Jenni Hendriks’ book of the same name, Unpregnant is heartfelt but also dysfunctional, as Veronica and Bailey spend most of their time onscreen at odds with each other. Bailey is upset that Veronica shunned her in an effort to fit in with the cool clique at school, a group Veronica feels she could never tell about her pregnancy.
Veronica eventually feels bad about how she treated Bailey and works to make up for it, going as far as to be there for Bailey when she confronts her estranged father in Albuquerque. Although they had put each other through a lot, they were still supportive toward one another when it counted.
