Rachel Chu and Goh Peik Lin (Crazy Rich Asians

Based on Kevin Kwan’s book series of the same name, Crazy Rich Asians tells the romantic story of Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and Nick Young (Henry Golding). While Rachel is all middle-class, Nick actually belongs to one of the richest families in Singapore. After becoming engaged, the two fly to Singapore for Rachel to meet Nick’s extended family. There, Rachel reconnects with her outrageous best friend from college, Goh Peik Lin (Awkwafina), who helps Rachel prepare herself to meet the Youngs.

Rachel is initially intimidated by Nick’s family, especially his domineering mother Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh). But with Peik Lin’s help, Rachel eventually stands up for herself, earning Nick’s mother’s respect. However, all is not well, as Eleanor had an investigator look into Rachel’s background, discovering that she is the product of an extramarital affair. Following this betrayal, Rachel stays with Peik Lin, who comforts her depressed friend.

Eventually Eleanor gets her stuff together, Nick decides that he loves Rachel and will marry her no matter what his family says, and, in true rom-com fashion, Nick catches Rachel as she is about to board a flight back home to propose to her again — this time, with his mother’s green ring, symbolizing her blessing.
