Brandy’s Cinderella is coming to Disney Plus
Many are familiar with the 1950 animated version of Cinderella with its sassy cat, Lucifur, and adorable mice, or the recent live-action adaptation starring Lily James. Yet, there is another version that has become just as iconic. The 1997 Cinderella TV musical starring Brandy Norwood as the eponymous princess opposite Whitney Houston as her fairy godmother, with original songs created by Rodgers and Hammerstein. And it’s finally coming to Disney + on February 12th, as part of the streamer’s Black History Month celebration.
No more wishing for a Fairy Godmother to help make this particular wish come true!
This version of the fairy tale offers a truly unique take on the classic story, combining different ethnicities, costuming, musical styles, and aesthetic scenery. And, of course, the iconic musical collaborations between Brandy and the late Whitney Houston (Fairy Godmother), which are what really gave this version its magic and legacy.
According to Entertainment Tonight, bringing Cinderella to the screen was a four-year project of Houston’s. She even hand-picked Brandy to play the pauper-to-princess.
"“To be the first African-American Cinderella, that’s history right there.” – Brandy in 1997."
Also included in the cast are such famous faces as Whoopi Goldberg, Victor Garber, Jason Alexander, Bernadette Peters, along with Paolo Montalban as Prince Christopher. (Whose voice harmonized particularly well with the pop star’s.)
The musical earned several award nominations, winning an Emmy for Outstanding Art Direction and an OFTA (Online Film & Television Association) award for Best Production Design. On its premiere night, Cinderella drew in a total of 6,000,000 viewers – one of the most successful Wonderful World Of Disney debuts.
At the stroke of midnight on February 12th, Cinderella will be available to Stream on Disney +. No glass slippers or pumpkin carriages are needed to attend!
