TV reboots we’d actually like to see: Snoops (1999)

Snoops was a dramedy television series that aired on ABC from September to December 1999, becoming the shortest-lived series on this list. Created by David E. Kelley at the height of the success of his series The Practice and Ally McBeal, the show centered around a less-than-conventional detective agency. The show was a smooth combination of style and substance–flashy but not shallow. It was also considered to be part of Kelley’s ongoing shared TV universe, with characters from Snoops guest-starring throughout the run of The Practice.

Gina Gershon and Paula Marshall were cast as the show’s leading ladies, Glenn Hall and Dana Plant (respectively). Glenn was head of the detective agency, while Dana was a newcomer but a former police detective. Danny Nucci played Manny Lott, the team’s resident tech guy, Edward Kerr as Greg McCormack, Dana’s former partner and love interest, and Paula Jai Parker as Roberta Young, an eager investigator who goes to great lengths to get the job done. Recurring cast members included John Glover, Stephen Tobolowsky, Priscilla Barnes, and Emmy Rossum.

Like many of the shows on this list, Snoops started off strong in the ratings game, averaging 11 million viewers weekly, tying NBC in the ratings. However, the ratings soon faltered, largely due to being pre-empted by sports and having it’s time slot shuffled every other week. The acting on the show was strong, with a clear chemistry between Gershon’s free-spirited Glenn and Marshall’s straight-laced Dana. While Roberta and Manny started out in minor capacities, the two characters were just beginning to experience some growth when the show was cancelled after just thirteen episodes. Adding injury to insult, only the first ten episodes were aired in the United States, while the final three episodes aired overseas. The final episode, which Kelley had rewritten following the cancellation announcement, served as a series finale.

The word “potential” cannot be used enough when describing this series. A female-fronted PI series, packed with strong female characters and non-toxic male characters, with a huge talent behind-the-scenes, should’ve been a no-brainer for ABC to hold on to. The chemistry and feel of Snoops has yet to be replicated, though ABC’s one-season wonder Whiskey Cavalier came close. It would be nice to see an updated version of the series, particularly in the wake of the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements.
