TV reboots we’d actually like to see: Witchblade (2001-2002)
Based on the Top Cow comic book series of the same name, Witchblade aired on TNT from June 2001 to August 2002. The series centered around a young female police officer who comes across a mythical, weaponized gauntlet, called the Witchblade, that grants the wearer special powers.
The officer comes across this magical glove just in time to face off with the Black Dragons, a group of assassins created by a now-defunct secret military program (think Super Soldier, but bad). The show of course doubled as a crime procedural as well, with a case-of-the-week format that at times interwoven with the young woman’s quest to find out more about why the Witchblade chose her.
Yancy Butler played Det. Sara Pezzini, the new owner of the Witchblade, who finds a found family with her police colleagues. David Chokachi was Det. Jake McCartney, Sara’s partner and potential love interest. Anthony Cistaro was cast as supervillain Kenneth Irons, while Eric Etebari played double agent Ian Nottingham. Will Yun Lee played Det. Danny Woo, a friend and confidante of Sara’s who believes in the supernatural.
The show ran for two seasons on the cable network and was slated for a third, until the show was canceled in September 2002, supposedly in connection with Butler entering rehab for alcoholism. Still, Witchblade remains as one of the highest-rated TV series to ever be canceled and was ranked seventh in the Top 10 Basic Cable Dramas for 2002 by Multichannel News.
While we’ve seen crime dramas mixed with the supernatural before, Witchblade was different in that it was a crime procedural first and supernatural series second. In the comics, the Witchblade belonged to several different women throughout history, and we can’t think of a better time to have another female-led superhero series on the air.
