TV reboots we’d actually like to see: Misfits of Science (1985)

Starting off with one of the oldest series on our list, Misfits of Science aired on NBC from October 1985 to May 1986. The show revolved around a research scientist who specialized in “human anomalies” (what we pretty much refer to as metahumans these days, thanks to the Arrowverse) and his quirky team of super-powered misfits who traveled the country locating other people with special powers and teaching those people how to use them properly. Sound familiar yet?

The show was a strange combination of Ghostbusters meets X-Men and was therefore way ahead of its time. The show lasted only one season with sixteen episodes, including an unaired finale.

The cast included Dean Paul Martin (the Dean Martin’s son) was Dr. Billy Hayes, the non-powered leader of the team who often got the team into as much trouble as he got them out of. Kevin Peter Hall played Billy’s colleague and close friend, Dr. Elvin “El” Lincoln, who is able to shrink from seven feet tall to just eleven inches due to a hormonal treatment he discovered. Mark Thomas Miller played Johnny “Johnny B” Bukowski, a rock-and-roll musician who was electrocuted on stage, granting him considerable electrical powers. Rounding out the main cast was Courteney Cox, in her first major television role, as Gloria Dinallo, a troubled delinquent with telekinetic abilities.

What sets this show apart from other series we have since seen that revolve around people with superpowers, is that the show mainly centered around science. Figuring out how someone’s powers’ worked biologically was just as important as figuring out how to use them. The show did a wonderful job of this, even if it came off as campy at times. Martin and Hall have both tragically passed away since the show aired, with Miller leaving the Hollywood scene and starting a construction company. Cox is the only one of the main characters still acting.

Since Cox is currently doing a full-circle marathon of her career, reprising her starring role in the upcoming Scream 5, as well as the upcoming Friends reunion special, we could easily see Cox returning to the role of Gloria in a full circle. moment. Perhaps leading a new team of “misfits,” acting as a mentor to younger people with special abilities and helping them learn how to use them without endangering other people. Your move, NBC.
