Tom Holland is Marvel Studios’ one-man hype machine. As a human being he’s like a fireball of positivity and enthusiasm, and his excitement for his upcoming projects always shines through sometimes to the point of giving away key plot points. When it comes to Spider-Man 3, Holland is trying to behave himself, but there’s no question he’s very excited about the sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home.

In a recent appearance on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, Holland talked about everything from his upcoming Apple TV project Cherry with Joe and Anthony Russo to filming the next Spider-Man film.

Holland revealed that filming on Spider-Man 3 is still underway despite completing roughly seven weeks prior to the Christmas break. He remains tight-lipped about possible cameos, but there’s no doubt he’s in love with the story:

"I can say that it’s the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made. You sit down, read the script, and see what they’re trying to do, and they’re succeeding. It’s really impressive. I’ve never seen a standalone superhero movie quite like it. And I’m just, you know, again, that lucky little shit who happens to be Spider-Man in it. We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we’re starting again. I’m just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it."

Tom Holland calls Spider-Man 3 ‘most ambitious’ of all superhero movies

Holland’s use of the word “ambitious” is curious, as it could relate to so many aspects of the movie. Thanks to the events in Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, the stage is set for a story that brings together many facets of Peter Parker’s life, and that’s why so many fans have speculated that Spider-Man 3 will feature a ton of cameos.

Over the past year, several names from Spidey’s past have been named as possible cameos in the new movie. From Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx to Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Even Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone have come up in conversations. However, the only actor confirmed to be returning from previous Spider-Man movies is Foxx as Electro.

Thanks to the existence of the multiverse, the ability to tie in anyone and everyone from Spider-Man’s cinematic history is suddenly possible, pending the availability of the actors, of course. And with Doctor Strange joining in the mix ahead of 2022’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, the possibilities are endless.

As Marvel embarks into the MCU’s Phase 4, it makes sense that the third Spider-Man movie is as epic as Holland suggests. The Marvel machine hasn’t missed a beat when it comes to releasing hit after hit after hit, and there’s no reason to stop now.
